How do you recommend I go about learning Java as my FIRST programming language? Any resources, books, courses (online), or ANYTHING that you think will help me is greatly and sincerely appreciated. —- The small details: The only other experience I have is in HTML and we design and I do not believe it counts for this want of experience. I also run Linux (Debian Sid) as an operating system and have a technical background (just not in programming or development). I will most likely be using Eclipse as my Java tool of choice, this much I do know from what I have read… Again, thank you! xq

Is it necessary to have a graphics card in order to run Ragnarok Online on Wine?

I tried playing the game using the following specs:

Machine: Dell Dimension L Series Desktop
Current Graphics: Intel Integrated Graphics
Current Operating System: Debian Etch 4.0
CPU & Speed: Intel Pentium 3 @ 1.000 GHz
Hard Drive: 160GB
RAM: 128MB

using Wine 1.1.1. The game starts out slow, and in the end result, the game just crashed on me, with my character and stats incompletely loaded. Would I have to get a PCI graphics card for it?

Additional Details: I cannot get another computer because of very limited budget and this is the one I’m trying to use more often.

It’s a newly-installed OS, and >100GB of free space. and I’m not talking about playing the game in Windows. I mean in Linux.

Is there a way to have a bash script executed whenever a user logs in to KDE? (It’s a per-user thing, so I can’t put it into an /etc/init.d script. It has to execute when the user logs in.) Distro is Debian, but anything that works on Kubuntu probably will work here. .bashrc is only read when a user opens an xterm or logs into bash from the console, not when they start up KDE from KDM. “Who is this?” — what more details do you want?

Het schijnt er niet in slagen om deze grafiekkaart tijdens laars omhoog te laden. Is het eenvoudig onverenigbaar? Ik weet voor een feit dat de pit aan laars wegens deze kaart ontbreekt.

And by that I mean, what hardware and software. I’m just curious and it seems a nice change of pace. I don’t know if we’ll see any patterns at all. Please name the web browser you use when you come here (if in doubt, it’s probably some version of Internet Explorer), the operating system (if in doubt, it’s probably some version of Windows. Specify if you can.), and the type of computer you’re using (The brand will do). Then specify your sex and how you identify yourself vis-a-vis gender issues. Taking myself as an example web browser: Iceweasel aka Firefox operating system: Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 hardware: a Compaq Deskpro EN made in 2000 purchased use then refurbished, upgraded, and customized. sex: male affiliation: feminist sympathizer Lioness, operating system? aww, I was hoping, given your work, that you might be running OpenBSD! Patois I don’t consider it rude, but if you do I respect your right not to answer. Never give out your IP address (unless it’s something like 192.168.0.X or you give 127.0.0.1 – sorry, geek humor. No, just never give out your IP address.) As for vulnerability due to software, most people use a recent version of Windows and IE and if someone wants to crack you, they’ll try exploits for those first (but since we’re all communicating through a centralized system here, the chances of that are NIL) without needing to be told what you use. btw, I frequent many forums where computer-savvy people gather and discussing one’s hardware and software choices is common. And many of these people also happen to be very aware of computer security. In those settings it isn’t considered impolite, nor is it deemed to support “hackers” (by which I assume you mean crackers and other online vadals. A hacker is a good thing. Don’t believe the hype.) spelling: vandals

I have two hard drives. I’ve been running XP on the first (C:/) and Debian on the second(D:/). Today I tried to install openSUSE on the D:/ drive over Debian. During the format stage of the SUSE installation something went wrong, I had to restart the installation. The second time around, SUSE didn’t recognize the D:/ drive, only C:/. I booted into Windows and the D:/ drive isn’t under My Computer anymore. Here’s what I’ve tried to correct the problem: Used a program called HDD GURU Low Level Format Tool. It recognized the D:/ drive and formatted it, though it didn’t tell me what format or let me choose. Rebooted, XP still can’t find it, I tried the SUSE install, same thing. Booted from my XP disk, tried the recovery console >fixmbr, didn’t do anything. Booted my XP disk and pretended I was installing XP, it only gave me the choice to install to the first drive. I tried a floppy called Super GRUB Disk, it recognized the drive, but failed to mount it. Out of ideas. Please help
