- Hi all, Im in my Final Year of my BSc degree in Network and Communication Engineering. I would appreciate it if someone could give me a few project idea's. my strengths are (so far) : * Unix socket and systems programming in C. * Signal processing/Image Processing/Digital Audio processing uisng Matlab and Simulink. * Digital filter/receiver design (theory) * Network configuration for a small office/school. * other programming languages familiar with : Java, perl, C++, javascript, php, Visual Basic. * Im also familiar with Unix and Linux(debian distro) apart from windows. all ideas (from serious to absurd) are welcome :) thanks,

- I am running Windows Home, and I am trying to connect to a Debian Linux computer using winscp382 (A program that allows you to brows the files on another computer if you know the computers ip, username and password). I use it to connect to 2 other Debian Linus servers from the same Windows computer, and it conneccts just fine. but when I try to conecct it to the other Debian computer it gives me and error saying " Network error: Connection refused" I know that the Debian computer is conected to the same network as the Windows computer and it is conected to the internet, and I know I have the username password and ip all correct. And one more thing, the user name that I am using for the debian computer is an addministrative account.
- I have a Debian samba server and I am using Ubuntu on the client side. Well, I can preview samba share on the debian server ,but Ubuntu can't access those shares. Everything is setup correctly and all the user/passwords are in the right files on both machines. When I try and mount the shared partition thats on the Debian system from the Ubuntu system it ask for user/pass that works fine, but the mount won't go through. I tried again and this time it don't ask for a user/pass and nothing else happens. I get no errors and I still see the shared partition as unmounted. What am I doing wrong. I even used S.W.A.T with no results. I had this setup working before and for some reason it won't work again. I've tried having both machines in normal accounts and (i know stupid) root accounts, nothing. I also set up the Ubuntu machine with a samba server and I can access shares from Ubuntu from the debian side.(reversed everything)The settings are the same on both machines.
- i have a home network and sharing a printer in it by using a debian linux box serving as a printer server. this linux box has cups installed in it, implementing ipp with the client stations. the printer drivers, on the other hand, are all installed on the client side. now, printing works well in all apps that i tried it on - except MS Word. notepad, PowerPoint, Excel, Acrobat Reader, etc all works. except Word. which is wierd. perhaps Word is using the printer drivers installed locally in a different manner that when it prints it causes a glitch that doesn't happen with the other apps? i've been pulling my hair for days to get this thing to work. i've also checked this problem online many times, but alas, i cannot find a solution... i've already tried reinstalling my office xp
- I have some old Compaq Deskpro p3 500MHz servers that I am using to make a website. One is running Ubuntu Server and another is running Debian. The Ubuntu Server is a LAMP Server while the Debian Server is just running php. The domain is jjtcomputing.co.uk and I am on a dynamic ip address. The Debian server is the main server that uses the jjtcomputing.co.uk. However, the forum is hosted on the Ubuntu server. They are both on the same network. I want to set up a sub domain forum.jjtcomputing.co.uk and that request to be sent to the Ubuntu Server while jjtcomputing.co.uk is sent to the Debian server. How might I do this? I have a spare Deskpro for this job with 3 network cards inside it running CentOS. P.S. the Debian Server is 192.168.0.3 on the internal network and the Ubuntu Server is 192.168.0.2. I have enough network cards to put them behind a gateway (the spare Deskpro)
- I want to setup a VNC repeater on a Linux server that has a public static IP so that I can connect and reverse connect two computers behind firewalls I don't have access to control. How would I set this up? Additional, but likely not needed info: I have a Debian 4.0 server and I have a public /29 subnet on a 3 Mb down 678 Kb up DSL connection. I also want to give my Mom tech support, but I would rather have VNC repeat through the DMZ to my private subnet rather than give my PC a public IP.
- i'm running debian sarge and all of a sudden proftpd isn't working. it gives me "remote host closed the connection." is it the firewall? how do i change the firewall settings? i already ran /etc/init.d/proftpd restart, reload, start, stop, killed the process id and started again. no luck.

- About 6 months ago I repartitioned my two hard rives so that I can run 2 operating systems. I installed fedora core 8 first. Then about a month later windows. When I installed windows, it covered my grub boot. So now I want to Install debian in fedora cores place but i cant remember which hard drive I installed it on. Is there a way to find out which hard drive windows xp is on so I can install Debian on the other on?

- have a pc with an athlon 2400+ 2.4GHz chip. a long time ago it slowed down a lot and now runs way below what it should. im trying to track down why. it runs slow on fresh installs of windows and debian. i noticed that the cpu it reported in the bios to be running at 69-70 degrees. i know that this is the higher end of what athlons should run at. But i also know that athlons do not have the same "clock down to cool down" mechanisms that intel P4s and the like have. so my main question is would an (almost) overheated athlon slow down? or (as i suspect) just cause crashes while remaining at the set frequency? thanks for any answers note: this is not a question about how to cool the processor but about the effects of it overheating
