Since you’ve stated that you’re a “newbie to Linux”, you should understand what “like debian, gnome, kde, etc…” is and the differences between it.
Debian is a distribution just like Yellow Dog. Gnome and KDE are X11 Window Managers that make your Linux desktop look spiffy.
Yes, even though it is a derivative of this other Linux, it’s still its own distribution, therefore I’m not going to even elaborate on why the above is false.
And what kind’ve software are you looking for? I’ve cited a bunch of links that you can use at any rate.
